How ro repair spanned and multi-part Zip files.

Spanned and multi-part Zip files.

A spanned zip file is a zip file that is split into multiple files, each located on a different floppy disk or other removable media. Spanned zip files are usually created directly to floppy disks or other removable media, in order to fill up each disk as much as possible or as specified. Spanned zip files allow a large zip file to be stored onto floppy disks or other removable media that normally would not fit.

A multi-part zip file is a zip file that is split into multiple files, all in the same folder. All the parts of a multi-part zip file usually have the same filename but with a different (numbered) filename extension. A multi-part zip file can be manually "converted" to a spanned zip file by placing each part on a separate floppy disk or other removable media and renamed to the same filename and filename extension.

The difference between a spanned zip file and a multi-part zip file is that a spanned zip file is created directly onto the target disks (each disk contains one file, always with the same filename) while a multi-part zip file is created into any target filesystem folder, with each part of the zip file having a different ( numbered) filename extension.

Repair spanned and multi-part Zip files.

Spanned and multi-part zip files are repaired in the same way as the normal zip files with the only difference being that all parts of a spanned or multi-part zip file must be joined into a single file before repairing.

If you want to repair a spanned zip file, you should first copy all parts of the zip archive to a separate folder on your hard drive. As all parts of a spanned zip file have the same name, you should change the extension of the file while copying, to receive such list of files:

zipfilename.000 (the file copied from the first floppy disk)
zipfilename.001 (the file copied from the second floppy disk)
zipfilename.002 (the file copied from the third floppy disk)
     ...
zipfilename.nnn (file copied from the last floppy disk)

If you are unable to copy a file, just skip it.

To join various parts of a spanned or multi-part zip file into a single file, use the COPY command, like this:

copy zipfilename.000 /B + zipfilename.001 /B + zipfilename.002 /B ... + zipfilename.nnn /B zipfilename.zip

After joining together the parts of the spanned or multi-part zip file, use Zip Repair Tool to repair the resulting file.
